Bodie, CA     Back to Sierras

Bodie, CA was named after William S. Bodey who discovered gold there in 1859.  By 1879, more than 10,000 people lived in Bodie and the town had a reputation for wickedness, badmen, and the worst climate out of doors.  Between 1860 and 1941, the Bodie mining district produced close to $100 million in gold and silver.  What's left today is only about five percent of buildings contained at it's peak.  (The spelling of the town's name was changed to insure proper pronunciation.)
